Clayton Blaisdell, Jr., a/k/a Blaze, has had a hard life which led him to petty criminal activities. Even though his partner, George Rackley, died three months before, blaze is still hearing his instructions for pulling off one more scheme--the kidnapping of an infant whose parents are millionaires. The story tells of the attachment blaze forms for baby Joe as he remembers his own childhood--one that was much different than the one baby Joe will have
