traditionally cardiac textbooks have been aimed at a select few nurses practicing within the coronary care unit. whilst this text should form the basis of all coronary care nurse induction programmes, the publication of the national service framework for chd has ensured the specialty has become much more diverse incorporating not only treatment but also the vital elements of prevention, rehabilitation and palliative care. it is therefore often difficult for clinicians new to cardiac care to ensure an adequate knowledge base in all these areas. this book has been written by experienced clinicians that are able to take the reader step by step through the patient journey, from initial prevention through the critical period to rehabilitation or palliative care. the book may be read as a whole or kept on hand for reference purposes. either way, it should become a fundamental resource for all those new to cardiac care.
