The semiautobiographical narrative describes a youth's love affairs with a succession of boys and men during the early years of the 20th century after self-deceptive attempts to find fulfillment, first through women and then by way of the church. Since his tragedy comes not only from his high sensibility, but also from his inability to satisfy his desires without involving his heart, each of the protagonist's sentimental or sexual escapades opens up a painful wound.
