Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each.Hamilcar Barca (c 275-228 BCE) was a Carthaginian statesman and general, and the father of Hannibal. He was the commander of the Carthaginian army in Sicily during the latter stages of the First Punic War against Rome. After the peace treaty in 241 BCE he retired to Carthage, and led the Carthaginian expedition to the Iberian peninsula where he expanded the Carthaginian areas and founded the city of Akra Leuke (modern Alicante). By the time of his death in battle in 228 BCE, Hamilcar had transformed Carthage from a purely naval power to a formidable land power. Hamilcar reinvigorated the Carthaginian empire, regained the resources of Iberia, and prepared a base for renewing the war against Rome, a task which his son Hannibal would take up in the Second Punic War.
