By far the most famous of his works is Robinson Crusoe.It is thought to have been inspired by the real-life shipwreck story ofAlexander Selkirk who spent four years stranded on the island of Más a Tierrain 1704-09. In 1966 this island was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island. Defoe died on 24 April 1731, possibly in hiding from thoseto whom he owed money. His cause of death was probably a stroke.
