Shomei Tomatsu (b.1930) is one of the most important photographers of postwar Japan. Key themes of his work are conflicts, contrasts and the Americanization of his homeland. He created his own approach to documentary photography - a mix of Symbolism and realism - which has greatly influenced subsequent generations of photographers.
