During the 19th Century the Native Hawaiian population was being decimated by the introduction of foreign diseases. This book follows the histories of four philanthropic projects created by Kings and Queens of Hawai i. The political-economic and social contexts of the 19th and 20th centuries are outlined. Issues such as globalization, the privitization of real property, changes in laws, and demographic changes in Hawai i are discussed. How have Native Hawaiians fared since the end of the 18th century?
