As the civil administrator he prepared a detailed report on the subdivision which was well received by his superiors and published by the government as a book: The Himalayan Districts of Kooloo Lahoul and Spiti in 1871. Harcourt was the first man to study vamśāvalī (the genealogical roll) of the Kulu rajas and first to classify the temple architecture of the area.
