Whitaker Wright began life as an impoverished English preacher before making his first fortune floating silver mines on the US stock market. He made and lost more than one fortune before a final, huge loss on the last trading day of 1899. Other infamous swindlers have followed in Wright's footsteps, but, for sheer daring and shamelessness, none have surpassed him.
