Robert Ranke Graves (1895-1985) was a British poet, novelist, and critic. He is best known for the historical novel I, Claudius and the critical study of myth and poetry The White Goddess. His autobiography, Goodbye to All That, was published in 1929, quickly establishing itself as a modern classic. Graves also translated Apuleius, Lucan and Suetonius for the Penguin Classics, and compiled the first modern dictionary of Greek Mythology, The Greek Myths. His translation of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (with Omar Ali-Shah) is also published in Penguin Classics. Robert Graves (Wimbledon, 1895 – Deià, Mallorca, 1985) fue un escritor, poeta y ensayista británico cuya obra abarca desde la poesía de guerra hasta la novela histórica y el ensayo mitológico. Participó en la Primera Guerra Mundial, experiencia que plasmó en su autobiografía Adiós a todo eso (1929). Estudió en Oxford y fue profesor de literatura inglesa en la Universidad de El Cairo. En 1929 se estableció en Deià, Mallorca, donde residió la mayor parte de su vida. Su producción literaria incluye más de 140 obras, destacándose por su erudición y estilo narrativo.

Entre sus obras más reconocidas se encuentran Yo, Claudio (1934) y su secuela Claudio, el dios, y su esposa Mesalina (1943), novelas históricas que fueron adaptadas exitosamente a la televisión. En el ámbito del ensayo, destacan La diosa blanca (1948) y Los mitos griegos (1955), donde Graves ofrece una reinterpretación de la mitología clásica desde una perspectiva poético-antropológica.
