The recipe calls for a dash of salt, but there's no mention of pepper. The boy reasons that everyone knows you have to have some pepper too, so he adds a dash of pepper, hoping it will improve the soup and make it more appealing to Floyd. But instead, the added pepper has disasterous results when Floyd downs his first batch of the tweaked soup.
