The History of the Shtetl after 1945 is the first book-length social history of the aftermath of the Holocaust in the Eastern European countryside and of the mass-scale repopulation, domestication and adaptation of vacated Jewish spaces. After the Holocaust, the shtetl began to be perceived in terms of “an East European Atlantis.” Against the background of this grand narrative of obliteration and discontinuity, this book argues that the shtetl still has a history after 1945—a largely overlooked one, but one that deserves to be told. The social function of the shtetls as predominantly, or in large part, Jewish settlements, living according to the rhythm of Jewish holidays, irreversibly ended with the Holocaust. And yet, the social reality of these towns: their material heritage, their economic condition, and social relations within them have continued to be defined by their history as shtetls. The shtetl also remains relevant to Jews—as a lieu de memoire, a pilgrimage site and, albeit to a small number of individuals, a home. Looking at six selected shtetls located in today’s Poland, Belarus and Ukraine, this book provides a comparative angle that allows to see wider transnational commonalities.

Der interdisziplinäre Charakter der Reihe, die in Kooperation mit dem Selma Stern Zentrum für Jüdische Studien Berlin-Brandenburg herausgegeben wird, zielt insbesondere auf geschichts-, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze sowie auf intellektuelle, politische, literarische und religiöse Grundfragen, die jüdisches Leben und Denken in der Vergangenheit beeinflusst haben und noch heute inspirieren. Mit ihren Publikationen weiß sich das MMZ der über 250jährigen Tradition der von Moses Mendelssohn begründeten Jüdischen Aufklärung und der Wissenschaft des Judentums verpflichtet.

The series European-Jewish Studies reflects the international network and competence of the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish studies (MMZ). Particular emphasis is placed on the way in which history, the humanities and cultural sciences approach the subject, as well as on fundamental intellectual, political and religious questions that inspire Jewish life and thinking today, and have influenced it in the past.

Die „Europäisch-jüdischen Studien“ repräsentieren die interdisziplinär vernetzte Kompetenz des neuen „Zentrums Jüdische Studien Berlin-Brandenburg“ (ZJS). Das Zentrum versammelt die wichtigsten Institutionen dieser Region, die sich mit Jüdischen Studien befassen – darunter die einschlägigen Universitäten und Einrichtungen in Berlin und Potsdam. Der interdisziplinäre Charakter der Reihe zielt insbesondere auf geschichts-, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze sowie auf intellektuelle, politische und religiöse Grundfragen, die jüdisches Leben und Denken heute inspirieren und in der Vergangenheit beeinflusst haben.
