Predicting the future is not an idle man's business. We humans rely on predictions in one form or another to make sense of life. We are not just automatons walking blindly into the future, we project the future, we plan and we chase these plans. Sometimes our projections of what the future will look like is accurate and sometimes we are wrong, but living without a plan is not an option so we still have to plan, which essentially involves some kind of prediction work.
