There is a "smelly" encounter with turkey vultures in Ohio's Wayne National Forest and Kade participates on a national fire prevention team in Colorado, where he unexpectedly gets to take a "harrowing" practice ride with up and coming race car driver Scott Dixon prior to the 2002 Denver Grand Prix. Through it all, Kade never waivers in his love for his family, his love of being a Forest Ranger, and his love of the National Forests.
