The Chambers School Thesaurus is specially designed for use by students aged 10-14 and is an ideal companion to the Chambers School Dictionary. Colour is used in the thesaurus to highlight particular parts of entries and thus make them easier to use. For example, where a word has more than one meaning, illustrative examples are given to guide users to the relevant group of synonyms. These illustrative examples are presented in colour, making them instantly recognizable. While the main purpose of a thesaurus is to provide the user with synonyms (alternatives) for words and phrases, this thesaurus also contains antonyms (opposites) and these are clearly indicated by the symbol () Hyponyms answer the question, 'What kinds of ... are there?', and there are over 60 such hyponyms in the School Thesaurus. A number of panels with the title Word Study focus on idiomatic ways of expressing certain concepts, eg anger, fear or surprise, while Word Workshop panels suggest alternatives to words that students may be tempted to overuse when speaking or writing, eg nice, really or great. You will find a list of these panels on page xv. At the back there is a handy list of words which are easily confused, and tables of specialist terms linked to school subjects.
