Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative condition. It is the leading cause of dementia. The major symptom of AD is the difficulty in remembering recent events. The course of the disease can be divided into four stages that are characterized by a progressive decline of cognitive and functional abilities- pre-dementia, early, moderate and advanced. A diagnosis of the condition is based on the history of the illness, examination of brain tissue, blood tests and cognitive testing with medical imaging. There exists no cure for AD and therapies are mostly palliative. Exercise, art, music and pet therapies, and other recreational activities offer some support in improving mood and behavior. Caregiving is essentially the treatment for people with Alzheimer's disease. The objective of this book is to give a general view of the different aspects of this condition.
