Status generalization has evolved over the past 25 years into a sophisticated set of theories of uncommon power and empirical utility. It refers to the process by which socially evaluated status characteristics (such as gender, ethnicity, age, wealth, and particular skills) influence face-to-face interaction, notably perceptions of competence and rates of participation and acceptance of influence. The 24 papers in this volume are interdisciplinary in character, ranging across sociology, social psychology, psychology, and education. They reflect the rapid pace of theoretical and empirical work on status generalization in recent years: extensions of the original theory, integrations with other sociological traditions, interventions in mixed-status natural settings to produce desirable results, and the development of new data-gathering techniques.
