Courtney the Hedgehog is devastated when his house is destroyed by people, but instead of moping around feeling sorry for himself, he sets off on an animal adventure that will take him through the Wood and across the river to his cousin's house in Middleland. Along the way he meets many other animals, making friends with Humphrey, an industrious Mole who agrees to accompany Courtney on his journey. He also meets Hammy the Squirrel and Barnaby, the Water Rat captain of a river boat, who has many fun animal stories to tell. As he gets nearer his destination, Courtney finds that helping others can often get you closer to your own goals. But what of the people who destroyed his home? Will they return to cut short his animal adventure? And what can one mere Hedgehog do to stop them if they do?
