Watterson dibujó la tira desde su debut, el 18 de noviembre de 1985, hasta el 31 de diciembre de 1995. En 1986, Watterson se convirtió en la persona más joven en ganar el prestigioso premio Reuben al "dibujante más destacado del año" de la National Cartoonists Society. Volvió a ganar el premio en 1988, y también fue nominado para el premio en 1992.
