Albert Gallatin Mackey (1807-1881) nació en Charleston, Carolina del Sur, hijo de John Mackey, médico, periodista y educador. Después de completar sus estudios primarios, Albert Mackey enseñó en la escuela durante algún tiempo para ganar dinero y poder estudiar medicina, graduándose por la Universidad Carolina del Sur en 1832. En 1838 fue nombrado profesor de anatomía en esa institución, pero en 1844 abandonó la práctica de la medicina. Durante el resto de su vida escribió sobre diferentes temas, especializándose en el estudio de varios idiomas, la Edad Media y la masonería. Después trabajar con varias revistas de Charleston, en 1849 fundó la revista semanal The Southern and Western Masonic Miscellany, que mantuvo prácticamente con sus propios medios durante tres años. De 1858 a 1860 dirigió una publicación trimestral sobre los mismos intereses. Posteriormente se dedicó exclusivamente a la investigación del simbolismo y las tradiciones cabalísticas y talmúdicas. Durante años trabajó como conferenciante y fue Gran Secretario de la Gran Logia de Carolina del Sur, así como Secretario General del Consejo Supremo del Rito Escocés Antiguo y Aceptado para la Jurisdicción del Sur de los Estados Unidos. Fue delegado y presidente de la Convención Constitucional de Carolina del Sur de 1868. Se postuló para el Senado de los Estados Unidos en Carolina del Sur en 1868, pero fue derrotado por el republicano Frederick A. Sawyer. Mackey se mudó a Washington, D.C. en 1870. Murió en Fortress Monroe, Virginia en 1881.
