Nimitz' clear vision, courage, and confidence in himself and his subordinates as well as his sound application of the principles of war overcame the overwhelming numerical and qualitative superiority of Yamamoto's Combined Fleet. Effective leadership is as significant in today's technologically advanced environment as it was during the World War II. The types of operational leadership challenges faced by Nimitz and Yamamoto must be faced by today's leaders, who must also carry the responsibility for ensuring the continued development of these elements of sound leadership in the operational leaders of tomorrow.
