William Steig (1907–2003) fue un destacado caricaturista y autor estadounidense, conocido por su trabajo en The New Yorker y por sus libros infantiles. Comenzó su carrera artística durante la Gran Depresión, publicando su primera viñeta en 1930. A lo largo de su vida, contribuyó con más de 1,600 dibujos y 117 portadas para la revista. A los 61 años, incursionó en la literatura infantil, campo en el que también dejó una huella significativa.

Entre sus obras más reconocidas se encuentran Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (1969), que recibió la Medalla Caldecott; Doctor De Soto (1982), galardonado con el National Book Award; y Shrek! (1990), que inspiró la exitosa franquicia cinematográfica homónima. Su estilo se caracteriza por una combinación de humor, ternura y una profunda comprensión de la psicología infantil. Steig continuó creando hasta sus últimos años, dejando un legado perdurable en la literatura y el arte.
