Salomon paired with a text by award-winning author Hisham Matar.Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) is among the most important Spanish artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A late masterpiece, his Forge derives from the mythological theme of the forge of Vulcan, the metalworker of the Olympian gods. The figures in Goya's monumental, haunting painting are instead muscular laborers at work around a blacksmith's anvil. Salomon's deeply researched text is complemented by a poetic piece by Matar.Designed to foster critical engagement and interest specialist and non-specialist alike, each book in the Frick Diptych series illuminates a single work in the Frick's rich collection with an essay by a Frick curator paired with a contribution from a contemporary artist or writer.

Hisham Matar nació en Nueva York en 1970, de padres libios, creció en Trípoli y en El Cairo y ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida adulta en Inglaterra. Su ópera prima, Solo en el mundo (Salamandra, 2007), se tradujo a una treintena de idiomas y obtuvo seis importantes galardones literarios internacionales. Un éxito que repitió con su segunda novela, Historia de una desaparición (Salamandra, 2011). Su tercer libro, el relato autobiográfico El regreso (Salamandra, 2017), ganó el Premio Pulitzer, el PEN/Jean Stein Book Award y el Folio Prize. Su última obra es Un mes en Siena (Salamandra, 2022). Profesor en el Barnard College, Matar es miembro de la Royal Society of Literature y miembro honorario de la Royal Academy of Art.
