Retired Baby Boomer and successful Manhattan attorney, Jeffrey Stallman, has failed to find happiness, partly due to his unrequited love for his best friend's wife. The Book alternates past segments of Jeff's life with his present situation in Colorado, moving backward to the distant past on a Nebraska farm, in an effort to examine how the past has irrevocably affected Stallman's present situation. Through Jeff's experiences in Kiowa and his belated grasp of his heritage, he is able to make meaningful decisions that balance the hurt of decades. Jeffrey Stallman's story is one of redemption, depicting the universal failures of all who attempt to succeed in a competitive society only to realize they have sold themselves for achievements they no longer value. In Colorado Jeff learns what it is to be connected - to his fellow man, his family and the vast Colorado landscape. This is a multi-faceted love story as well as the psychological depiction of a complicated and well meaning man who refuses to give up on his notion of the American Dream.
