This study comprehensively explains water quality and core sediment characteristics in an inland wetland (Vellayani Lake) and a coastal wetland (Poovar Estuary). The study allows for independent analysis of each region (i.e. freshwater, estuarine, and marine) of the ecosystem, to differentiate how each portion plays an important role in the system's overall function. The study on wetlands revealed that the water quality of both Vellayani Lake and Poovar Estuary is subjected to pollution and degradation. To reduce wetland pollution, people must avoid waste disposal in the wetlands, initiate proper monitoring programs to identify direct and indirect pollution sources and provide awareness classes to the native people on the importance of wetlands.
