The poems here were written from 1972 through 1982, when the author, S.D.L., was fourteen through her early twenties. Poetry has always been her way of trying to make sense of the world and understand the craziness going on around her, as well as her own confused swirling emotions. However, until now, she always kept her poems hidden, her innermost thoughts and feelings known and seen only by her. This is the first time she has stepped out of the shadows. I BELIEVE IN SHADOWS My life is a shadow of black and grey Like smog rising high from some chimney Then evaporating and dissipating forever Into the void of the sky. A shadow, like some imperfect outline Blending with the background. I am here yet I am a shadow (head down...eyes down...) Blackness envelops me As I hide in a corner of shadows, Where what I want to believe, is real, And what I don't believe, does not exist (if I do not want it to) No one can know me (for no one knows a shadow) All you see is an outline -- The rest is just a shadow (I believe in shadows) Is it better to be seen as a shadow Or not be seen at all? (I believe in shadows) Is it better to live as a shadow Or not to live at all? (I believe in shadows) -- Written on a cold grey November day in New York City when the author was sixteen.
