This is his pretend life, after a personal tragedy destroyed him, months earlier. Upon learning of the lost earring, and of the practical jokes made by Jake the barber, Dr. J exploits both sides, sending the entire town into a circus of laughter and fun. What makes this novel somewhat different than your traditional comedy is the author used his real wife's name, in the community where they live.
