Más conocida como Dana Meadows, nació en marzo de 1941 en Elgin (Illinois).

Estudió Química en el Carleton Collage y, tras doctorarse en Biofísica en la Universidad de Harvard en 1968, entró a formar parte del Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) como investigadora.

En el MIT ayudó a confeccionar el modelo computacional global World3 para el Club de Roma, y proyectó las bases del libro Límites del crecimiento, en el cual se recoge un estudio de tendencias globales a largo plazo en las áreas de población, economía y medio ambiente. Esta obra fue el inicio del debate mundial, que aún hoy continua, sobre los límites de la capacidad de nuestro planeta para soportar la expansión económica del ser humano.

En 1981 fundó la Red Internacional de Centros de Información de Recursos (INRIC), con dos objetivos claros: crear un proceso global de mecanismos de colaboración y compartir información entre académicos, investigadores y activistas del movimiento del desarrollo sustentable. Asimismo, creó el Instituto de la Sustentabilidad, que combina la investigación en sistemas globales con demostraciones prácticas de vida sustentable, incluyendo el desarrollo de «ecovillas» y granjas orgánicas.

En 1990, fue galardonada con el premio Walter C. Paine de Ciencias de la Educación y, de manera póstuma en 2001, con el John H. Chafee Excellence del Medio Ambiente. Además, su columna «El ciudadano global», en la que trataba semanalmente asuntos mundiales desde el punto de vista sistémico, fue nominada al premio Pulitzer en 1991.

Donella Meadows, la influencia de cuyo trabajo en estudios académicos, iniciativas gubernamentales y tratados internacionales fue reconocida ampliamente, murió en febrero de 2001 en Hanover (New Hampshire).
