Reseña del libro "Masala Mamas: Recipes and Stories from Indian Women Changing their Communities through Food and Love (en Inglés)"

Winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2019, Fundraising In the Kalwa slum of Mumbai, India, sixteen women rise before dawn to cook hundreds of hot meals for children who would otherwise go to school hungry, or go to work instead of school. They are the Masala Mamas, and this is their cookbook. Masala Mamas brings together more than eighty vegetarian, kosher recipes from the Maharashtrian home kitchen. Dals, chutneys, dosas, breads, festival sweets, fasting foods, and everyday mains, all made without an oven and with the spices and flours these women grew up with. A visual guide to spices, lentils, and leaves, a glossary of Hindi and Marathi kitchen terms, conversion charts, and substitution tips make the recipes easy to follow anywhere in the world. Alongside the recipes are the women's own stories. Indu, who never finished fifth grade and now manages a kitchen that feeds hundreds of children a day. Sangita, married at fifteen, whose daughters are now studying in the sciences. Essays on arranged marriage, fasting traditions, festival foods, and the status of women in India place the cooking in the world it comes from. Anthropologist and award-winning author Elana Sztokman compiled the book with the women of Gabriel Project Mumbai, the charity that runs their kitchen and the Love2Learn school it feeds. All proceeds from the book go to Gabriel Project Mumbai to support education, nutrition, health, and community development in Kalwa. Praised by chefs, food writers, and the United Nations Special Ambassador for the International Year of Pulses, Masala Mamas is a cookbook about food, friendship, and women changing their communities one meal at a time.
