On the Significance of Religion for Populism interrogates the significant role which religion can play in diverse contexts of political populism by focusing on Türkiye, the UK, and Israel.

This book brings together three faith traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and several academic disciplines (theology, religious studies, politics, and international relations) to critique the complex relationship between religion and populism. Using a combination of theoretical interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches, theological analysis, and ‘real-life’ case studies, focussing on Türkiye, the UK, and Israel, the authors examine how religion can be itself a purveyor of populism and how it can be a countervailing force in challenging populism. The ‘real-life’ case studies show that various forms of nationalism and hegemonic politics are two key areas where populism and religion can become intricately linked. This cutting-edge volume identifies ways in which secular and religious actors can further develop and enhance their cooperation as a counterforce to populism, providing several important recommendations.
