She was born in South Africa during the apartheid era which is the impetus for her writing. Human relationships tested by societal injustice and personal challenges, frame the crafting of her stories and poems. Mala has worked as an educator in South Africa during the height of the apartheid era and in the early days of its collapse from power and control. She currently works as a part-time educator and university advisor in Australia. Mala upholds that literature instils understanding to a moment in time, an event, situation or conversation that brings clarity to daily existence from unheard voices on the fringes of society.
