Mircea Cartarescu nació el 1 de junio de 1956 en Bucarest, Rumania en el seno de una familia de clase media. Desde temprana edad demostró un fuerte interés por la literatura y la múscia, influenciado por la contracultura de los años 60 y 70. Desarrolló sus estudios en la Universidad de Bucarest, en la facultad de letras donde se doctoró con una tesis fascinante sobre el posmodernismo rumano. Ha sido profesor universitario, editor y colaborador en revista literarias, además de miembro activo del PEN Club rumano y del Parlamento Cultural Europeo.

Inició su carrera literaria como poeta en 1978 y publicó su primer libro, Faurir, vitrin, fotografii (1980), que le valió el Premio de la Unión de Escritores de Rumania. Su obra se caracteriza por una prosa lírica, onírica y expermental, en la que la frontera entre la realidad y el sueño se difumina. Ha explorado temas como la memoria, la identidad, la historia reciente de Rumania y el poder transformador de la literatura.

Fue galardonado con el prestigioso Premio Formentor de las Letras, y ha obtenido galardones de la importancia del Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding, el Premio Gregor von Rezzori, el Premio Thomas Mann, el Premio del Estado Austriaco a la Literatura Europea y el Premio FIL de Literatura y Lenguas Romances.
