George Nakashima fue internado durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial porque, como estadounidense de origen japonés, se le consideraba un "extranjero indeseable". En un campo de prisioneros de Idaho, aprendió carpintería con otro recluso que se había formado con maestros ebanistas japoneses. Nakashima creía que el carácter o el espíritu del árbol debía dictar el diseño de una pieza.
