With over forty years of clinical experience, Tom Butero has developed a unique and comprehensive approach to the assessment of suicide risk and effective approaches to intervention and prevention. Staring with an overview of depression and its effects, Tom discusses why and how someone chooses suicide as a "way out" of their problems. He goes on to present an assessment tool and strategies for intervening in a suicidal crisis. In addition, he discusses the need for and issues related to suicide education in the schools and the role of the media in reporting suicide. A full chapter is devoted to special factors as they relate to adolescent suicide. The book concludes with a discussion of ethical issues and poses the question for the practitioner as to the "right" of an individual to commit suicide.
