SUNDIATA: THE BOY WHO MADE THE LION RISEA Journey Through the Birth of the Mali EmpireBefore Sundiata Keita became the legendary Lion of Mali, he was a boy people underestimated.Eleven-year-old Kande Keita carries the name of one of Africa's most famous rulers-but she barely knows his story. Then her grandfather shows her a mysterious golden lion pendant marked with seven tiny paw prints. One touch sends Kande tumbling through the River of Memory and into the world of thirteenth-century West Africa. There she meets young Sundiata before the empire, before the victories, and before the legend.Guided by the mysterious and hilarious griot Balla Fasseke, Kande follows Sundiata through hardship, exile, friendship, danger and the struggle against the powerful Soumaoro Kanté. Along the way, she must unlock seven magical lessons: Memory. Patience. Adaptability. Discernment. Responsibility. Unity. Legacy. But Kande soon discovers that history is more complicated than the stories we remember. What is history? What is oral tradition? What is legend? And how do we know the difference?Filled with magic, humour, courage, African history and unforgettable adventure, Sundiata: The Boy Who Made the Lion Rise is a journey into the beginnings of the Mali Empire-and the extraordinary child behind the legendary Lion.Because heroes are not born as legends. They grow into them.A lion does not become a lion in one day.
