During the reign of Grand Master De Rohan, a young aspiring knight from Brittany is sent to Malta to join the prestigious Order of the Knights of St. John. He carries with him those precious documents which prove his nobility without which he could never become a knight. His papers are stolen during an unfortunate encounter during his voyage. On reaching Malta he is unable to prove his true identity and is forced to enlist as a mere soldier rather than a distinguished knight. He soon realizes that the person who stole his identity has become a knight using his name. While Alain de Jocet desperately tries to prove his true identity he falls in love with Sword-Lily a young Maltese diva highly admired for her beauty and her performing talent at the opera. Sword-Lily is determined to help Alain prove his identity but to do so she must contend with Montalan the evil rogue who was enjoying the privileges of knighthood with a borrowed name.August de Kermainguy did an outstanding job in researching the historical facts having no doubt met with some of the last remaining eyewitnesses of that period. The result is a gripping story of tragic love, treachery, crime and murder
