$ 279.920Europe is facing a period of profound socioeconomic and environmental instability, with rising economic pressure from China and the United States. This book argues that these overlapping crises are not only challenges but also opportunities to reaffirm Europe's distinctive economic and social model. It answers a crucial question: how can Europe become more sustainable and socially cohesive while maintaining economic prosperity?
Drawing on comparative research, case studies from the food, pharmaceutical and energy sectors and more than 150 interviews and analysis of 200 media articles, the author examines the strengths and weaknesses of the European model. The book shows that Europe's comparative advantage lies not in copying the American or Chinese model, but in its own social market economy, where competitive markets coexist with strong institutions, public coordination and a commitment to broad prosperity. The analysis reveals that Europe does not primarily suffer from a lack of knowledge, innovation or entrepreneurial talent. Instead, its greatest challenge is turning innovation into large-scale economic and societal transformation. Fragmented markets, coordination failures, concentration of power and difficulties in scaling new technologies continue to slow progress.
Combining insights from institutional economics, innovation studies and sustainability transition research, The Economic Future of Europe argues that Europe's future depends on strengthening its institutions, accelerating innovation diffusion and building an economy that serves society rather than the other way around. The book connects innovation, sustainability, industrial policy, and social welfare into a coherent guide for academics, researchers, students and policymakers.
