Wilhelm Reich was born in Austro-Hungary in 1897. By the 1920s, Reich had become a doctor of medicine and taken his place as a prominent psychoanalyst in Sigmund Freud's inner circle. He went on to focus his attention on the relationship between the emotional, physiological and physical functions of the biological energy underlying human emotional experience, which he called orgone. He saw psyche and soma as a unified whole and the goal of therapy to balance the body's energy metabolism by dissolving characterological and muscular defenses which he called armor. He saw the function of the orgasm, which he described as any natural living process involving the buildup of mechanical tension, energetic charge, energetic discharge and mechanical relaxation, as central to the understanding of healthy functioning. This book is a kind of scientific autobiography in which the author traces his personal and professional development from his first interactions with Freud and psychoanalysis in 1919 through the approximately 20 tumultuous and highly productive years that followed.

Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957) fue un influyente psicoanalista y médico austríaco, conocido por sus controvertidas teorías sobre la sexualidad y la energía vital. Nació en un contexto de Europa Central marcada por las tensiones sociales y políticas, lo que influyó en su pensamiento. Inicialmente, Reich fue discípulo de Sigmund Freud, pero pronto desarrolló ideas propias que desafiaron la ortodoxia psicoanalítica. A principios de los años 30, introdujo el concepto de "orgón", una supuesta energía vital universal que, según él, influía en la salud física y mental.

Reich también fue un defensor de la libertad sexual y se opuso a la represión de la sexualidad, argumentando que la inhibición sexual causaba trastornos emocionales y psicológicos. Sus trabajos sobre la sexualidad y la psicoterapia fueron innovadores, pero generaron gran controversia.

Tras el ascenso del nazismo, Reich emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1939, donde continuó su investigación sobre el orgón y desarrolló dispositivos como el "acumulador de orgón". Sus teorías fueron ampliamente criticadas y, en 1956, la FDA de EE. UU. confiscó sus equipos.
