We're always told to write about what we know and since I was 44 years old and has never married, I thought I'd write about what it's like being single. I live in a society that celebrates sex and a church that celebrates families and there were times I feel like I didn't fit in either (I am now married but that's another story. It happened after I had written most of the book!). I have many friends who were also single or single-again so I drew on their experience as well as incorporating a ton of research. I might have gone overboard on the research but it was so intriguing that it kept drawing me in. Often times we start a project thinking it's about one thing, then along the way, find out it's actually about something else. So it was for this project. I discovered I wasn't just writing about what it was like to be single, but I was writing about gender imbalances, why it was so hard for people to find a life partner today, joining dots on how society has shifted in the past thirty years or so and trying to wrap my head around what the New Covenant means for women, individuals and families today. I was startled by some of my discoveries, as were others who have read the book. I don't claim to have everything right, for wherever there are humans, the possibility of human error is there. But I hope you enjoy an honest look at why some people are missing out on a mate and how we can work better with the incredible singles in our midst.
