Twelve year-old Riley has always been inventive. But when intruders snatch his parents from their space cargo ship, Riley must use that cleverness, some of his inventions, and what little confidence he has to plan their rescue. Following clues left by his father, and with the help of friends he meets along the way, he embarks on a journey across an unfamiliar and treacherous world to find them. His journey gets complicated though, when learns a secret that his parents had kept from him - that he is a Guardian of their home planet's energy source, uluuria. It is Riley's role as Guardian that has made him a target of Klor, a diabolical, unstable, and broken man bent on crushing the Uluurians. Klor will stop at nothing to collect uluuria to use in his war machines against them. When Riley learns that the uluuria he is charged to protect is the last of the energy source that Klor needs to carry out his plans, Riley must choose whether to fulfill his responsibilities as a Guardian and protect his home planet or continue on his quest to save his parents.
