Significant updates were made to this book in October 2023, which makes this story even more compelling. The material in this book will help to save lives (perhaps your own). It's based on Dr. S. L. Young's experiences after his near-suicide in March 2014, along with sharing details about the loving relationship that developed between him and a mother (Mary Hanson) whose son (Brian) tragically died-by-suicide. This book celebrates Brian's life, along with continuing his legacy after his transition to external life in February 2012. I never met Brian, but we almost shared a similar fate, as I nearly died-by-suicide due to incorrectly believing that I was being strong by struggling alone and not asking for help. In March 2015, I wrote the article "Letter to Myself the Day Before My Near-Suicide" to share that I was happy to still be alive. A grieving mother (Mary Hanson) read my article... and an amazing relationship developed in which we saved each other. "Turning Darkness Into Light" captures our stories to raise awareness about the importance of mental health, share a personal experience with depression, and to save lives.
