Advocacy here is defined as speaking on behalf of other people - usually people that have injuries or needs so severe that they cannot resolve them alone. Advocates are skilled in the use of VOICE. They are trained in identifying problems and applying solutions. They "know what to say and how to say it" so that emergencies may be addressed and power (VOICE) is learned by the people that are helped. Through the work of advocacy, people in difficult situations learn more about helping themselves. The advocates that have agreed to make contributions to this book have learned or are learning to use their VOICE in the hard places of the world. The needs in these places like needs everywhere are mostly centered on health and safety concerns. Overriding health and safety is the need to have the power to act and so there are civil order and political issues that must be addressed.
