France later persecuted the Protestants (Huguenots) by killing them or chasing them away. The whole controversy developed into a very unclear tragedy as different European rulers thirst for power grew. Neither side involved in this feud was willing to give in, causing it to last nearly 30 years! Peace was finally signed in 1648 at Münster, Germany, and much property and land was newly distributed between the parties. Though it was unfair, the poor and the farmers got no reimbursement at all for their terrible losses! At the end there was no winner or loser - we all lost!
