Reseña del libro "Diaspora of the City: Stories of Cosmopolitanism From Istanbul and Athens (Palgrave Studies in Urban Anthropology) (en Inglés)"
This book explores the multiple meanings of cosmopolitanism in changing spatial and temporal contexts. As the former capital city of two great empires--Eastern Roman and Ottoman--Istanbul has been home to a great diversity of populations--a condition often glossed as cosmopolitanism. The Greek-speaking Christian Orthodox residents of Istanbul (Rum Polites) are one of the oldest communities, who have shifted their status from ruling to elite and then to a dwindling minority of a few thousands in the Turkish Republic today. In the global mega city of Istanbul today, the Rum Polites are remembered nostalgically as part of a cosmopolitan urban past, where the change from an imperial multiculturalism to the homogenizing tendencies of nationalism became visible in the drastic process of their forced displacement. This book examines how Rum Polites continue to identify with the cosmopolitan legacy of Istanbul (Poli), a matter of distinction as vividly shown in the practices of their everyday life and cultural memory, and thereby constitute their presence as living in the diaspora of the City.
