Nació el 20 de mayo de 1949 en Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Estudió Arte Dramático en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte. Ha sido por dos años presidenta del Author´s Guild, la asociación de escitores más relevante de Estados Unidos. Durante algún tiempo vivió en Creta, una isla griega, donde surge su interés por la mitología.
