Most of the great inventions of energy technologies were introduced only one hundred years ago. Only by switching our present energy sources can we prevent the accelerating deterioration of environments. Energy researchers and engineers are facing huge and urgent challenges. How can we replace petroleum with a substitute? How can we assure affordable food supplies in the future? How can we generate enough electricity without using coal or nuclear fuels? How can we stop the melting of ice and the inundation of coastal cities? How can we stop global warming and overheating of Planet Earth? How can we pay for developments of better energy technologies?
