"Whispers From African Hollow" conveys the magnitude of faith, adaptability, industriousness, compassion and the importance of higher education within the context of family history. The central character is Smith Reynolds, the son of an African slave, Lilborn Reynolds, who arrived in Pulaski in the 1820s. Smith Reynolds, born in slavery, became a Civil War Union Army veteran reaching the rank of Corporal with the 111th Regiment Infantry. After the war, he amassed a large amount of land, now known as African Hollow, and bequeathed it to his sons, one of whom was Mack Reynolds who became a formally-educated Baptist preacher, and community leader.
